NETEZZA AND GUY CARPENTER
DEMONSTRATE POWER OF IISi-DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGY

IISi Leverages Netezza's Architecture for Advanced Analytic Development

At the February 19, 2009 webinar, Guy Carpenter's Shajy Mathai discussed how they have leveraged Netezza Spatial™, Netezza's application extension, to provide high-value location analytics applications to their insured business clients.

The technology was developed by Richard Zimmerman, President and CTO, of IISi. IISi is the first developer of customer specific solutions that leverage the power of massively parallel processing data warehouse platforms.

From retail to financial services to telecommunication and government, location information plays a key role in decisions that can make or break an organization's success. But many of the spatial operations used in location intelligence applications are highly compute intensive, requiring considerable additional processing capacity in the data warehouse. The cost, complexity and high level of expertise required to analyze and manipulate spatial data has historically created a divergence between GIS and IT infrastructures. Over time, this has tended to create a distinct ¢wspatial silo¡ü in many enterprises with very limited sharing of data and analyses for location intelligence. The result is that the individuals who have access and understanding of spatial data cannot easily collaborate with the business users or decision-makers who would be able to use the information to improve business processes.

In a September 16, 2009 Xconomy article, Guy Carpenter revealed that the most frequently answered questions such as how many of a client's subscribers live within a given floodplain or earthquake zone or are likely to suffer storm damage in an approaching hurricane are being addressed in record time. "Providing real-time, predictive data to our insurance customers is critical when it comes to natural disasters," said Mathai, a Guy Carpenter managing director, said in a statement. "The combined solution of Netezza, MapInfo and Safe Software provides us the critical tool we need to ensure our customers are getting the most up-to-date information."

Netezza's Jon Shepherd couldn't say to Xconomy exactly how much faster Guy Carpenter can run geospatial queries now that it's using Netezza's appliances. "What we're comfortable saying is that we're seeing the same order-of-magnitude improvement - meaning 10 to 100 times faster than our customers' legacy systems," he says. "We'll have more case studies as we announce more customers. But the issue Netezza is seeing is that our 200-plus [existing] customers want to capture this data, but it has not been easy to query and derive meaningful analytics. That was really the motivation for us to acquire this technology and make it available."

IISi has created technology solutions that significantly expand the Netezza accessible market. The agreement will enable Netezza to fully exploit the potential of the IISi developed products. The key applications are:

  • The Geospatial Toolkit for Netezza, which provides an enormous leap forward in functionality for a $500 million market segment relating to MPP (massively parallel processing) geospatial solutions in the data warehousing industry; and
  • The Extended SQL Toolkit for Netezza, which adds significant new SQL functionality to the Netezza platform in areas including XML, encryption, hashing, text analytics, regular expressions, compression, encoding, date and time, array/collection functions, and data mining - including fuzzy matching.

The original IISi development effort was part of the Netezza Developer Network (NDN), a program that enables developers to leverage a high-performance, streaming analytic appliance platform to design and develop applications and algorithms for competitive advantage. The NDN provides members including customers, developers, systems integrators, complementary technology partners and the academic community widespread support for the creation of a new generation of analytics.

"Rich Zimmerman, Chief Technology Officer of IISi, and his team have proven to be leaders in MPP application development for the data warehousing industry. We look forward to their next contributions," said Justin Lindsey, Chief Technology Officer of Netezza.

"We have had a great sales partnership relationship with IISi and expect more successes," said Netezza Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales Ray Tacoma.

"At Netezza, the power to question everything is paramount to our technology, our business and our success," said Lindsey. "By creating the NDN, we have opened the door, and our appliance, to a growing community of visionaries focused on building ground-breaking analytic applications. Innovators are able to share knowledge and learn how Netezza's streaming architecture can become the backbone for future application development and create more powerful ways to unlock the intelligence in their data."

"IISi has opened a whole new set of opportunities. The potential of the Geospatial Toolkit is tremendous," said Netezza Channel Manager Bob Doyle. "This product delivers the essentials of the market leading solution - except at Netezza speed - a 50 time improvement in speed and efficiency." Examples of key applications addressed include:

  • Emergency or financial planning in response to disasters
  • Retail store location optimization
  • Wireless service boundary determination
  • Transport fleet management

The second IISi product, The Extended SQL Toolkit for Netezza, will provide a powerful software package with new SQL functionality to the Netezza platform in areas including XML, encryption, hashing, text analytics, regular expressions, compression, encoding, date and time, array/collection functions, and data mining - including fuzzy matching.
